Welcome to the Home Team for Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bethesda, MD.  We invite anyone and everyone to join the Home Team to support our Away Team that will be heading to News Orleans for the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering.  We ask you to support us in several ways.

First, pray for us as we prepare.  We will be joining 36,600 other Lutherans in New Orleans to leave a mark.  We cannot erase the mark hurricanes Katrina and Rita left on that region, but we can leave our own mark – A mark of caring and love.  We invite you to view the short video called “Marked” to get a better understanding of what we are talking about.  We are going to New Orleans to listen and to do God’s work with Our hands.  We will not presume what is the best thing to do for the people of New Orleans and the surrounding area, we will listen to them and respond with the gifts God gave us.

Second, we still need financial support.  With your help we have raised $8633.  We still need to raise at the minimum another $2500.  We would like to raise another $3500.  Please see the page entitled “Goal” for the up to date amounts.

Third, pray for us while we are down in New Orleans.  Our focus area will be the Environment.  The local environment was severally impacted by the hurricanes.  In the right-hand column you will see a page called “Environmental Issues in New Orleans” which gives a good overview of the problems there.  We also would like to keep us, and the other 36,600 people at the Gathering in your prayers as we commit ourselves to compassionate justice.

Fourth, talk to us about our experiences when we get home.  Don’t let us get away with answering questions about our experience with, “It was great,” or “I really learned a lot.”  Challenge us.  Come to our dinner in the fall where we will talk about our experiences.

Fifth, continue to pray for us.  We all need prayer.  Those of us who will be attending the Gathering will have the opportunity to partake in a life changing experience.  Pray that it does that for us.

Those who are going to the Gathering are:
Adults
Pastor Robert Lewis, Jennifer Lewis, Sue Hunley
